Oh Dear
Docs/Notifications

Slack

You can receive Slack notifications by coupling your Slack Workspace with Oh Dear. All our notifications can then be delivered to a Slack room of your choice.

Getting started #

This guide assumes you've followed our Getting Started documentation to know where you can configure your notifications.

The first step is to link your Slack Workspace with Oh Dear. This can be done on both the team-level as well as the monitor-level.

To get started, create a Slack notification configuration.

Slack Apps

You'll be prompted to confirm that you do want to allow us to post to your Workspace. We'll need these permissions to send the alerts to you.

Slack Apps

Once you click Allow, you will be redirected back to Oh Dear where you can choose which Slack channel we can send the alerts to.

Choose a channel and the notification types #

Now that the Oh Dear application and your Slack Workspace are linked, we are almost ready to send you notifications.

Next, you can decide which channel should receive our alerts. Fill this in, pick the type of alerts you'd like, and save the settings.

If you want to send notifications to different channels, you may click Add another at the bottom to create a new destination.

Sending to a private channel #

Our Slack bot can post to any public channel on its own. A private channel is different: Slack only delivers to a private channel after the bot has been invited to it.

If you pick a private channel, open it in Slack and run /invite @Oh Dear to add our bot, then send a test notification.

Reconnecting an older Slack connection #

Slack retires classic apps on 16 November 2026. Connections made with Oh Dear before we moved to Slack's modern bot tokens run on one of those classic apps, so from that date on Slack rejects the alerts we try to post. Nothing errors out on your side, the messages simply stop arriving.

If any of your Slack notifications are affected, you'll see an orange Reconnect Slack button next to them in your notification settings, and a banner at the top of the app.

Reconnecting is a single trip through Slack's approval screen. Your channel and your event selections are kept, so there's nothing to configure again afterwards. You can also reconnect at any time from the Reconnect with Slack button when editing a Slack notification.

Testing the Slack alerts #

Head over to the Send test tab to test the alert and you're all set!
