Which SMS providers does Oh Dear support?
Oh Dear sends SMS alerts through Vonage (formerly Nexmo). It's the only SMS provider we currently integrate with.
Why Vonage, and why you bring your own account
SMS pricing varies wildly per country (a message to Belgium costs nothing like a message to India or the US). Rather than mark up every SMS and bake a broad markup into our plans, we let you bring your own Vonage API key. You then get Vonage's raw per-country pricing, on your own Vonage bill, with your own spending caps and country allowlists.
The setup:
- Create a Vonage account and grab an API key and API secret.
- Paste both into Oh Dear's SMS notification settings.
- Send a test message.
That's the whole thing. Full walkthrough in the SMS notifications docs.
What we don't support
We don't currently integrate with MessageBird, Twilio, AWS SNS, Plivo, Sinch, or any other SMS gateway. We've looked at adding others but haven't seen enough demand to justify the maintenance of multiple provider integrations, so Vonage it is.
If you have an existing account with a different provider and you'd rather keep using it, you can route our webhooks to your own forwarder and dispatch SMS from there, via any provider you like.
If SMS isn't critical for your team
A lot of our customers don't use SMS at all and rely on chat tools instead. We natively support Slack, Microsoft Teams, Discord, Telegram, Pushover, Ntfy, Opsgenie, and PagerDuty. For most teams, a Slack or PagerDuty alert lands faster than an SMS anyway. See all notification channels.
